* Hand wash in lukewarm water, 37°C (98°F)
* Use soap powder, mild soap, baby shampoo or wool wash
* Gently squeeze garment, do not rub or wring. Add 1 Tbsp. Vinegar to last rinse.
* Roll in towel and squeeze out excess moisture.
* Hang dry away from strong heat or sunlight.
* Lifespan and performance of the diaper cover will be enhanced by adding lanolin. Dissolve 1/8 of a teaspoon in hot water and add to last rinse. This only needs to be done occasionally.
Bummis
Diaper covers can be re-used until soiled or smelly. Simply rinse off
any urine residue and air dry in between uses. Rotate your covers
after each change. Check the care instructions on the label of your
cover!
The following products should be washed in lukewarm water and
hung to dry or air dried at a low setting in the dryer: Bummi Original, Bummi Cotton, Whisper Pant, Cotton Whisper Pant
The following products can be washed in hot or warm water and dried at a regular setting in the dryer. Do not over dry: Super Whisper Wrap, Super Snap, Super Brite, Training Pant, Polar Bummi
Always close the Aplix™ closures before washing.
Don't use bleach or whitening agents. They will breakdown the fibers of your diapers and covers and are also very harsh on your baby's skin and the environment. Never soak your covers! This will interfere with their waterproof qualities.
Bum-Ware
Bum-Ware diapers should be washed and dried on hot for maximum
absorbency at least 3 times, prior to first use. Thereafter, wash with
hot water (no higher than 120F) and line dry or machine dry on
medium heat setting. Use only a small amount of detergent. Do not
use Dreft. If you find that the hidden layer bunches up (like pockets in your jeans, you have to put your hands in your pocket to straighten them) stretch the diaper on the sides from top to bottom to smooth the hidden layer. The diapers are designed to roll in at the legs to keep the wetness in. Always make sure no white fabric is sticking out, make sure there are no gaps at the legs, and that there is no clothing inside the diaper to prevent wicking.
Cover care: Wash separately from hook and loop (Aplix™) diapers.
DryBees
Please pre-wash your DryBees cloth diapers before use.
Wash your diaper in warm water with a reduced amount of detergent. You may dry your DryBees Cloth Diapers in a low dryer, or outside on a clothesline. Wait until diapers are completely cool before stretching, pulling on, or stuffing diapers or you can ruin your elastics. DryBees Pockets, Night Times, or Hybrid AIO's are all washed the same.
Brightly colored nighttime diapers should be washed separately the first time because some of the outer fleeces do bleed for the first wash. Washing brightly colored laminated diapers in extremely hot or boiling water may cause these diapers to bleed or delaminate. Generally, this is a guideline for international customers, as their washing water tends to be much hotter than what we use in the USA. Microfiber inserts should be pre-washed on hot with reduced detergent. Please dry your microfiber inserts on low in your dryer or outside on a clothesline.
Bamboo Diapers should be prewashed two times or more for best absorbency before use. Bamboo fabric should be handled more gently. Do not stretch while wet or fresh out of the dryer. When line hanging Bamboo diapers, hang so you are not pulling in the direction of the stretchiest part of the diaper (i.e., hang sideways for diaper and soaker).
Washing your DryBees cloth diapers is very easy. First, fold back your laundry tabs. This ensures that you won't find the dreaded "diaper snake" after you wash your diapers. Take care the first few times to match up the hook and loop carefully until your diaper tabs "learn" where to fold easily. Next pull out the inserts. Finally throw it all in the washing machine. Choose the warm water level that will completely cover all your diapers and use a reduced amount of detergent. Using water that is too hot or boiling can weaken the bond of the laminate to your outer fabric. You can use a second rinse to ensure all of the detergent is rinsed out. Please tumble dry on your diapers on the low setting of your dryer or outside on a clothesline. Using a hot dryer can cause the lamination to stick together and pull apart. Never use bleach or excessive chlorine on your diapers as this can weaken the bond of the laminate to the outer fabric. While bleaching your diapers may work the first 20 times it is doing damage to your diapers and is not recommended.
Fuzzi Bunz
FuzziBunz™ diapers are single use diapers. Wash both the FuzziBunz™ and insert after each use. Most babies will experience little to no diaper rash after using FuzziBunz™.
Do not use any rash or diaper ointments or creams with the diapers.
First, run a cold rinse or soak cycle with no detergent.
Second, run a hot cycle with detergent. Do not use bleach.
Third, if your hot wash is not automatically followed by a cold rinse, run a cold rinse cycle. This step is only necessary with a particularly dirty load.
Tumble dry the diapers in dryer on low or hang to dry. Do not use
fabric softener or pure soap. Never dry on high heat.
Happy Heinys
* Remove the inserts
* Cold Soak for 10-20 minutes depending on the level of dirt
* Wash on hot with slightly less than 1/4 cup of detergent
* You can add a downy ball of Vinegar to the wash if the diapers
have a heavy urine scent. I recommend a downy ball because it
releases the vinegar at the right time - no need to wait by the
machine.
* Rinse well to ensure all detergent is removed from diapers.
* Dry on high heat. The high heat of the dryer will keep your Happy
Heinys functioning like new. We personally dry our PUL products
on high heat and although we have had prolonged use with these
products we have not noticed any break down of our PUL.
GoodMama
Honestly, I am impatient and I use the diapers right out of the package, with the knowledge that it is not at full absorbency this way. However, if you are the prepping sort, just throw the diaper in with your next load of diaper laundry (you can skip putting it through the first cold rinse when you are rinsing the ickies out of your other diapers). Your diaper will become more absorbent with each wash, but it is completely unnecessary to wash it multiple times before use. Please also be aware that while the fleece portion of the diaper is prewashed, the diapers are designed to shrink to the correct size. If the diaper seems too big right out of the package, wash it a few times. It should shrink down to the intended size.
Do you have any washing recommendations?
Yes. Please do not use bleach or borax, or run your diaper through the dishwasher. If you have hard water, use water softener with every cycle, but never use regular fabric softener as it can coat the fibers of your diaper and retain smells and reduce absorbency. Everyone finds their own perfect washing system, just like everyone does their laundry a little differently. Here's my washing routine for my 2 1/2 year old daughter's diapers. Please bear in mind that you may not need to do this complicated of a routine. Diaper laundry is like regular laundry. It's just laundry, not science!
-
Cold wash/cold rinse cycle with ~1/4 cup White King water softener and a generous squirt of Bac-Out
-
Hot wash/cold rinse cycle with ~1/4 cup White King water softener, 1/4-1/2 cup Planet powdered detergent, generous dash of tea tree oil
-
Warm wash/warm rinse with ~1/4 cup White King water softener
We have extremely hard water, hence the need for water softener in every cycle. It has made all the difference in my diaper washing. Your method may vary. The key is to start out as simply as you can, use enough detergent to actually get your diapers clean, and then rinse enough to rinse all of the detergent out. Don't be afraid to use detergent. Just make sure you rinse it out! After this I pull a diaper out and smell it deeply. If it smells whiffy at all, I will run it again. Then I toss everything in the dryer for a 60-minute cycle with several dryer balls. They work wonders for keeping your laundry soft and fluffy. Our diapers are designed to dry as quickly as a prefold.
Do you have any recommendations on how to keep the
bamboo velour soft?
Yes! I have just learned that a natural fabric softener called Ecover works wonders in keeping bamboo velour silky soft. You only need a tiny bit every once in a while. I recommend trying a small amount first to see if this works for you. If you wash your fitteds with any pocket diapers you may have, I recommend not using any kind of fabric softener on pocket diapers as it could cause repelling. This does not need to be used every wash, but perhaps a tiny bit as a tune-up periodically. Also, drying on low with lots of dryer balls seems to make the velour really fluffy.
Do remember that our bamboo velour is an organic fabric and will change over time. Other diapers might be made from 80% cotton/20% poly velour and while this stays exactly the same over time it is not as absorbent because it is 20% non-absorbent plastic and the other 80% is not made from organic sustainable fabric. Our bamboo will always be comfortable, breathable and organically soft for your baby and wonderfully absorbent and antimicrobial.
Green Acre Designs
On washday run the diapers through a cold rinse to remove any solids that may remain on the diaper and to rinse out most of the urine. Use liquid detergent, and only 1/2 to 1/4 the recommended amount. This is all that is necessary for a thorough cleaning. Tumble-dry them on HOT, new information says this is actually good for the PUL. PUL was invented for the medical industry and is meant to hold up to the really high temperatures of the sterilization process used in the medical industry.
Once dry, let your diapers cool off before you stuff them. If you stuff the diapers while they are still warm it can cause the elastic to break. When your diapers are cool, stuff the diaper again so it is ready for the next use!
Things NOT to do to your GAD:
Don`t use any bleach products, bleach is a strong chemical and will break down the fibers in the diapers. To remove stains, hang or lay your diapers in the sun, it works wonders!
Don't use fabric softener. It will coat the diapers making them water repellent and will cause leaks! Be aware that if you use dryer sheets in your dryer for other laundry this can coat your dryer and transfer to your diapers.
Knickernappies
How do I wash Knickernappies Disposanot diapers?
Simply run a cold rinse to wash off most of the ickies and prevent stains from setting. Then wash on hot with 2 or 3 Tablespoons of detergent*. Then either dry in the dryer or hang dry. (Cotton prints will last longer if they are hung to dry.) First wash: no special instructions for the first wash, but I highly recommend drying in the dryer the first time and once a month or so afterwards. This does help to seal the PUL nice and tight. *For detergent, the actual amount that is best for you may vary depending on machine and water quality. Most people find that 2 to 3 tablespoons works. Do not use free & clear detergents. In general, these will cause buildup. Do not use bleach or fabric softener.
How do I dry Knickernappies Disposanot diapers?
You may dry them in the dryer or hang them to dry. Cotton prints will last longer if they are hung, but do dry them once in a while to keep the PUL sealed.
Do I need to prep my 100% hemp inserts?
The hemp has been washed once. If you only buy a couple, then they may be washed right away with your diapers. If you buy more, then they really should be washed separately two more times to wash out the natural oils in the fabric. I wash mine with regular laundry for those first washings so that I don't waste washes on just a few inserts. It can take up to 8 washings for hemp to be fully absorbent. You may use the inserts prior to this; just remember that they aren't fully primed so you may need to change diapers more often.
Do I need to prep my Loopy-Do inserts?
No. The hemp in Loopy-Do inserts has been prewashed so that it won't leave buildup on the microfiber. These can be washed immediately with the rest of your diaper laundry. The microfiber has also been prewashed so that any dye residues are washed away.
Loveybums
Fitted Diapers and Doublers: Wash on hot or warm with a mild detergent; tumble or line dry. Do not use bleach or fabric softener.
Organic diapers and doublers: Please wash before first use to remove natural oils and increase absorbency. Wash on hot or warm with a mild detergent; tumble or line dry. No bleach or fabric softener.
PUL Covers: Wash on hot before first use; wash on warm or cool thereafter and tumble dry low or line dry. No bleach or fabric softener.
Fleece Covers: Wash warm or cool, tumble dry low or line dry. No bleach or fabric softener.
Wool Covers: Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent or wool wash; hang dry. When your cover begins to lose some of its water resistance, you will need to re-lanolize it. You can do this by dissolving a small (pea-sized) amount of pure lanolin (such as Lansinoh cream) in tepid water and soaking your cover for about 15 minutes. Adding a drop of baby shampoo to the water may also help to dissolve the lanolin. After soaking, wrap your cover in a towel to squeeze out excess water and hang dry.
Loveybums-in-Ones: Please wash the outer (cover) according to the directions for the particular type of cover (PUL, fleece, or wool-see above) and the snap-in diaper according to the directions for a fitted diaper.

BREAST FED POO:
Just roll up the dirty diaper until you can get to your diaper pail or even wait till wash time...no need to pre rinse or anything cause breast fed baby poo will dissolve in the wash.
FORMULA FED & SOLID POO:
Simply "plop" that poo into the toilet and flush. *Did you know that even disposable diaper companies recommend that procedure as well?* Solid and thicker poo will not cling to the fleece - a little residue is fine.
Slip the insert out and into the pail or wash. Fasten the velcro tabs to the laundry tab so that they do not snag on each other white in the wash.
WASH:
First run a cold rinse to loosen up and discard of and poo remnants. Add detergent - ONLY ADD 1/2 - 1/4 THE RECOMMENDED AMOUNT FOR THE APPROPRIATE SIZE LOAD.
Wash with a cold rinse.
Dry in dryer or hang dry (extends the life of your flannels especially)...if you can let them hang dry in the sun once in a while, the sun will take out any discoloration that may have appeared over time.

Cloth diapers need to be washed and dried once before you use them. This will fluff them up and make them absorbent. Hemp or unbleached cotton diapering products should be washed and dried 3x before use to rid the fibers of the natural oils.
-
Shake solids into toilet. Newborn stools will be too loose to shake clean. In this case we recommend using a diaper sprayer or for the simplest solution, set your washing machine cycle for an extra initial short cleansing. Washing machines with a pre-wash cycle make diaper cleaning even easier and are the perfect solution to pre-rinsing. If you do not have a pre-wash cycle on your washer, then consider running your diapers through an initial short cycle followed by a heavy cycle. Use COLD water for the first pre-wash cycle to help lift stains. Please note: Do not pre-soak your diapers for longer than 10 minutes. Presoaking will set the stink deeply within the fiber of your diaper and will also wear away the waterproof layer. Use a dry diaper pail for storing dirty diapers.
-
Collect soiled or wet diapers in a lined plastic dry pail. You can purchase a special made diaper pail, but we have found your basic plastic 52-quart garbage can and lid works just as well, is more affordable, and is available at your local department or hardware store.
-
You can optionally add a sprinkle of baking soda to your diapers and pail to help neutralize odors. Once mixed with water in your washer, the baking soda will help to lift stains.
-
For optimum cleanliness, limit the size of your load to no more than 24 diapers and wash every other day. As a general rule, the fewer diapers per load and the shorter the time between washes, the fresher your diapers will be.
-
Then, use HOT wash and rinse with high water level. Use a mild detergent with no phosphates, and minimal additives. Add only 1/2 the recommended amount of detergent for top-loaders and 1/3 the recommended dose for high efficiency and front-loaders. Avoid all soaps and many "Free & Clear" and/or popular baby detergents. These detergents will leave a residue on your diapers that will affect the absorbency and may cause 'stinky' diapers and/or diaper rash. Please see info and list compilation to the right for more info on cloth diaper detergents.
-
Hang to dry or dry in dryer. Add a dry towel to the dryer to speed the drying process. Occasionally you may wish to dry in dryer on high heat to help with sterilization and to reseal lamination. Drying in direct sunlight is the very best method for drying and disinfecting. Hang drying also helps to preserve the textiles of your diapers and is great at getting rid of stains. Cotton and hemp diapers will be somewhat stiff when hung to dry. So to soften sun-dried dipes made from natural fibers, you may choose to use the dryer for the last 15 minutes.
-
Some parents like to add 1/2 cup vinegar to the final rinse to reduce residue of detergent or hard water. DO NOT use vinegar when washing cloth diapers made from synthetic textiles...this includes most all diaper covers and some brands of cloth diapers, including Thirsties® Fab Fitteds and Pocket AIOs. Synthetic fibers tend to hang on to the Vinegar smell. In lieu of vinegar in the final rinse, we preferplain lime juice. 1 Tsp lime juice will aid in naturally disinfecting and neutralizing, and is safe for all types of cloth diapers.
-
Even if you follow all the rules above, you still might end up with occasional stinky and less absorbent diapers due to detergent, diaper rash ointment, and/or water mineral residue. Simply replace your regular detergent with 1/4 cup Calgon® water softener (found at your local grocers) or 1-2 Tbs Dawn® or Ivory® dish soap. This process is often referred to as diaper stripping. Strip your diapers as often as needed, but not at every wash.
-
Finally, if your diapers are in need of a thorough deep cleaning, you can use a bit of OxyClean Baby® in place of your regular detergent. Do this only when needed. If you hang in the sun, you will find you never need to use OxyClean Baby®.
Woolly Bottoms
Fill your sink with enough lukewarm water to sufficiently cover your wool. Add a bit of woolwash (do not use Woolite, only use a lanolin rich wash specifically designed for diaper covers) to your running sink water. Wool wash bars can be used to help remove tough stains as well. Most wool washes are formulated so there is no need to rinse. A bit of baby shampoo can be used if wool wash is not readily available. With liquid wool wash, let your wool sit for about 15 to 20 minutes. Drain water and gently squeeze wool. Lie in between 2 bath towels and roll to remove excess water.
Or if you are doing several covers, put them in your washing machine and run the spin cycle (no water) to quickly and efficiently spin out the excess water. Reshape, and lay flat to dry away from direct heat or sun. Liquid wool wash is good if your cover needs a gentle cleaning. If your child is like mine though,
they like to abuse their wool with food, dirt, and grime. A good wool wash bar is good for these times. Fill up a sink full of warm water, wet your wool, and then lather the bar right into the wool to get out those tough stains. Always check in a hidden spot to ensure colorfastness. Then rinse immediately and remove right away and dry as listed above.
For interlock wool, we recommend soak times of a maximum of 15 minutes. Interlock can also be safely washed in the washing machine on a gentle wash/rinse cool cycle for a really deep clean. Machine drying is not recommended.
How to Lanolize
Prepare your sink just like you are about to wash your cover. I have found the creamy style lanolin to work the best in getting an effective coat of lanolin on my wool. It contains all the original fats that are removed from the liquid forms. Take a pea-sized amount and place in a baby food jar along with a drop of baby shampoo. Fill jar with super hot water and shake to dissolve the lanolin (or an alternative to completely melt your lanolin is place the jar & lanolin without the lid in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. Then add the hot water & shampoo). (This will ensure the lanolin is completely dispersed). I prefer to microwave to really make sure that the lanolin is liquefied and will not form pool and form spots on my covers. Fill your sink as I stated just above with warm water and wool wash. Add your lanolin mixture and swish. I prefer to turn my covers inside out so the majority of the lanolin is on the inside right where you need it. Add the wool cover and let sit anywhere from 15-30 minutes. Make sure water remains relatively warm to keep the lanolin suspended properly and from forming lanolin spots. Drain and dry like normal.
