Pocket Diapers
This two-piece system requires an insert to be functional. The pocket diaper has 2 layers -- an outer waterproof layer and an inner layer of microfleece or suedecloth. The insert is stuffed into the pocket opening and is typically made of microfiber or hemp; however, pre-folds or towels can also be used. The inner layer of the diaper is designed to wick moisture away from baby, and the insert is meant to absorb everything. A strong advantage to the pocket is that the amount of absorbency can be controlled by adding more inserts when needed.
All-in-one (AIO)
The AIO is the most similar to a disposable diaper. Just as the name implies, they are all in one piece, made up of an outer waterproof layer & an inner absorbent layer. These would be very ideal for day-care centers because they are so user-friendly. Another advantage is that there is no stuffing, no required cover and no pins. However, a major drawback is the extra-long drying time, due to the sewn-in layers of absorbency.
Pre-Folds
Pre-fold diapers are flat & rectangle shaped, as well as sewn into thirds. circle ME's pre-folds are 4-8-4, which describes the number of layers of cloth in each panel from left to right. While being the most economical, pre-folds also require folding & a waterproof cover. To add extra leak protection, pins or a snappi fastener can be used; this style is recommended for infants. Pre-fold diapers also provide the benefit of additional uses such as burp cloths or dust rags & can also be used as inserts for pocket diapers. Though they may require a little extra time to put on, they definitely have a reputation of few, if any, leaks.
Fitted Diapers
Fitted diapers are made up of several layers of cloth. This type of diaper resembles a pre-fold, however, fitted diapers are contoured to your baby's shape and typically have elastic at the waist and around the thighs. While very easy to use, due to the Velcro or snap closures, they are more expensive than pre-folds. Waterproof covers are also required.
Diaper Covers
The old-style vinyl pants are a thing of the past! Today's diaper covers come in a variety of closures such as hook & loop (Velcro) or snap closures. Diaper covers or wraps are used to cover pre-folds and fitted diapers to prevent wetness getting on to your child's clothing. They come in many forms such as vinyl, polyester, fleece or wool. Each diaper cover can be used several times between washes if allowed to air dry between uses (when no soiling occurs). Simply wipe out the cover and hang to dry.
