Babywearing is one of the oldest traditions around the world. Today there are many options available such as ring slings, wraps, pouches, and soft-pack carriers. Baby-wearers have been an integral part of nursing, holding and mothering a child for centuries throughout almost every culture. There is a closeness that a sling provides that no other method of holding a baby can provide. The warmth, the heartbeat, the bond between mother and child — all of these are at the center of what is important in parenting a new baby. Baby-wearing is the most effective and simple way to maintain the warm, natural connection a child has with its mother and father.
Types of Baby-Carriers
Ring Slings
Ring Slings are the most well known type of baby slings. Easy to use, easy in-out, many uses for that long tail. Most people can wear any size - the size simply dictates the length of the tail. With a bit of practice, you will be able to carry your newborn in an upright or reclining position. This is one of our favorite carriers for infants - it is our first choice for nursing in the carrier.
Wraps
A wraparound carrier, or wrap, is the simplest baby carrier. It is a long piece of fabric that is used to tie the baby to you. It has been used across the globe in many cultures because of the versatility and simplicity. Wraps are one of the most comfortable baby carriers for you and your baby. There are hundreds of ways to wrap your baby, so there is a carry style for everyone. Weight is evenly distributed across your shoulder, back and waist.
Pouches
A pouch is a tube of fabric with a curved seam sewn in the middle providing a "pouch" for baby to sit in. Pouches are non-adjustable and custom fit to the wearer. Pouches use a one shoulder style carry and are very easy to use. Pouches are excellent for quick trips and errands. They can be used for a newborn carry, upright carry, and a hip carry.
Soft Pack Baby Carriers
This carrier in its most basic form has a rectangular or square shaped body and four straps - one coming from each corner of the body piece. They have been used for centuries in many Asian cultures. Today there are modern variations such as padded straps, buckles, and clips. | |
